Botox injections are used selectively to weaken the muscles that cause unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. The substance is a purified derivative of botulinum toxin with a broad range of medical applications and cosmetic benefits. Injected in very small amounts, it is able to weaken selected muscle(s) for three to six months on average. Although the muscle(s) eventually regain normal function, they are trained to relax during the inactive time, ultimately making the lines less severe than they were prior to treatment. Each session eliminates or reduces the treated lines and accomplishes a bit more of permanent wrinkle reduction when the function returns. Botox treatments should be performed frequently to maintain optimal control of the unwanted lines. However, occasional users can enjoy the benefits of Botox before holidays and special events.
