Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) - What to Expect

Eyelids surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under sedation, and rarely, under general anesthesia. Preoperative history and physical, as well as specified laboratory tests are performed in anticipation of surgery for anesthesia proposes.

10 days before surgery

We ask that you discontinue all aspirin, aspirin-containing products, Vitamins A, D, E, and ibuprofen or like products. Follow skin care instructions if specified by Dr. Pacheco.

Day of surgery

You should not have anything to eat or drink for a full eight hours before surgery. On arrival to the surgery center, Dr. Pacheco marks the eyelids. The surgery is performed while you sleep, and local anesthesia is used to ensure your comfort.

After surgery

You will need to apply ice on your eyelids for at least 48-72 hours. Warm compresses may be used instead starting on the fourth day. Antibiotic ointment and/or drops will be provided for you to be used for approximately one week. You may choose to take Arnica Montana orally, which may reduce swelling and bruising expected after surgery. There will be some swelling and bruising, but most of it resolves within the first week. Minimal restrictions are placed regarding exercise, bending and lifting heavy things for one week, to prevent more swelling than necessary, bleeding and infection. You may shower, wash you hair and get sutures wet without worry, but you should not scrub or manipulate the wounds.
